Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
Put a new speedometer cable in my car and it keeps coming out of the speedometer. The speedometer was just serviced . Is there something I can use to keep the cable in the speedometer.

Do you mean the nut that holds it is unscrewing?

Squeeze the nut a little bit, just enough to give it a bit of a bite.

Re: Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
The inner cable comes out after a few bumps. When I insert the inner cable it seems to fit ok and. Seams to fit just fine. I thought about a drop of lock tight.

Re: Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
Is the cable well lubricated? If the inner cable rides against the housing it could twist, thus shortening the overall length.

Re: Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
If the "inner cable" is coming out, then it is too short or installed the wrong way. The end with the flange would be at the top. Some might use a washer under the crimped on drive head.

Re: Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
I had the same problem on 3 cables I have bought in the last 3 year’s. It is because the cables are made to short. The stuff is just not made to spec. All I did on my 28-29 was remove the drive gear from the torque tube ,clean the grease from it and make a spacer that will fit inside the speedometer drive gear out of a nail or something that will act as a spacer. Mine had to be 1/2 a inch long. Put the spacer in and problem solved.

Re: Speedometer cable keeps coming loose
Talked to my Model A grue today, there were some cables made a few years back that were too short (oval type speedo without the thrust washer at the speedometer end). They need an added plug in the driven end (at the drive shaft). Some kits came with a plug to install down there.
