Default Door hinge help

Has anyone changed the lower door hinge pins on a '46 Ford/Mercury? I bought a hinge pin removal tool from Eastwood (it came in a Mac's box) but I can't get the tool far enough under the hinge pin because of the door. Has anybody ever ground off the head and driven the pin out from the top? Will it even drive out (because of the knurls)? What's the trick?

I bought the tool and tried to use on my 40. It bent the tool and broke one of the pins within minutes of first use and that was with heat. My door hinge was sitting for years without use though. I had to heat and spray with 50/50 trans fluid acetone mix and allow to soak. I did this once a day for 3 days. The third day while it was still hot I used a small long drift a little bigger than a nail set and drove it out manually. I returned the tool to Mac's and decided to order one from Drakes thinking I might get better quality and it looks almost identical and have yet to try. Good luck and be patient

Thanks funrunr. This is the bottom hinge and there is no way to get a drift under there to drive the pin out from the bottom. Thinking about grinding off the top of the pin, drilling down past the knurls and trying to drive the pin out from the top. There has to be a better way.

I forgot you have those built in running boards on a 46, my boards were removed. Try the tool while the hinge is cherry red from heat. I do believe letting it soak did help.
Good luck and please share what works for you.

This is actually one of the best ways to do it. Use a big enough bit to separate the knurled area from the rest of the pin. If the door is still on the car this method works well.

Would the idea of unscrewing the hinge from the door
and the A pillar and then working on the pin make it easier?
At least then you could use a vise and avoid the
potential of "racking" your A pillar or door by hammering.

See post #3 on this thread. Worked great for me. I used a 12" bit...

On the pins that seem frozen for good... I use an air hammer with a center punch (of sorts)... this has always worked on the VERY stubborn pins. Of course, this is figuring you have access to the bottom of the pin...

Place something solid under the hinge between the running board ,like a scissor jack or a block of metal drill a hole in it for the pin to go through or weld something on .,pad the rubber so there's no damage .Place a 2x4 on a floor jack and jack up under the running board in line with hinge .and do one of the above and drive the pin down and out .Ted

As previously mentioned, I'm sure you gotta drill out the top "splined" section of the pin, it's fatter than the rest of the pin.

Looks like that's my plan of attack. Drill the top and drive down.

I've had great success grinding off the head (very carefully) and then center punching the pin. I then drill down 1/2" or so with a 1/8" bit. I then enlarge the hole to relieve the knurled part of the pin. I then drive the pin down. It works every time for me. Let us know how you make out.

Does anyone have a picture of the pin showing the knurled part and the 'fatter' part? Looking at pins in Ford Parts catalogs, they look straight, although some have an oil groove. And for the posts that suggest heating the hinge, is that on cars that are not painted yet, or is there a way to heat the pin without damaging paint?

I had one of the pins on my PU broken in 2 places so that there were 3 pieces. I used an impact hammer and the 3 pieces aligned them selfs somehow and came out. Don't know how the pin broke, but it ended up being a pain to get out.
