Removing a differential bearing race
Would like some advice on the best way to remove a differential bearing race on the ring gear side of a "40 axle housing tube. The race is rusty so I am not going to save it. Would heating the outside perimeter of the race seat help, or can you knock it out with a long tube from the back side. Thank you Fordbarners.

The absolutely easiest way to remove a bearing race like that is to simply run an arc weld/mig weld around it, upon cooling down the bearing will have shrunk and simply fall out!

Use the long pipe or solid rod method.

Welding it out works 100 % of the time and requires no other tools. Just sit it on the floor with the bell end down after you put the heavy weld bead on the race and listen for the sound when it falls out. Fun way to do it.
Driving it out has challenges and require the right shape on the end of the rod and may not be easy at all. Takes more time, may not work well and not nearly as much fun as welding it out. My opinion |

I took a piece of steel bar stock, radiused both ends so it would sit on the slight edge of the bearing race. Then lowered the table down on my press so the axle housing fits on the table directly under the hydraulic jack. Using an old junk axle, inserted backwards into the small end of the axle housing until it stops on the bar stock, I press the bearing race out of the housing. I prefer doing it this way because I take a quantity of these banjo rears apart and save many of the good original Ford bearing sets which are much better quality than some of the new imported bearings available today. I posted pictures here doing this years ago, not sure I can still find that post, or if the attached pictures were posted from photobucket.

Agree with laying a good high quality bead all the way around. If it doesn't move hit it again. If it's really stubborn then use a brass punch to knock it out evenly on all sides. I have started doing this on any race removal: spindles, steering box, rear end. Just watch your splatter and don't ruin the race entry surface.
