I am getting conflicting info about replacing the gear on the rear axle in my 1931 Model A. I am new to model As and the club. I took the rear end apart and pulled the axles out. It doesn't look like the gear is removable from the axle? I need to replace the axles?

Tom Endy (he is a member here) wrote some good instructions for rebuilding the A rear end. I am on dial up right now and it takes too long to open his page but a google seach will get you there;

As for your questions; the Model A rear axle gears DO NOT come off, they are part of the axle. The gears on the Model T axles do come off.

Why do you need to replace your axles?

Actually you "split" the differential gear housing. This releases both of the axle AND the ring gear is attached to one of these halves.

Be ye careful in the reassembly. Follow Tom's instructions to the letter. Best if you have a torque wrench calibrated in inch-lbs - although you can do the setup as I did when I was 18 years old with a weight and a string.

I have MUCH better toys, er TOOLS now. Side benefit of a mechanical interest.

Too bad its a dying art. Although to go to the dealer a flourishing trade.

The key slots are a little worn. Shame because the rest of the axle looks good on both.

If the rest of the axle is mint you can have a new key slot machined opposite the old ones.
