Default Tranny grease

I have a 50' Deluxe with 3sp O'drive. Was wondering what oil would be the best? I recently drained it and changed it to Green Bible spec's. just to know it is fresh. Now it shifts really stiff from 1st. to 2nd. like its dragging in direct drive. Works fine in OD. Any ideas? Thanks.

They always specified NOT to use high EP gear lube in the Borg Warner electric overdrives due to the sprag clutch in the tail shaft. GL5 is high EP and should not be used. NAPA carries GL4 gear lube (Sta-Lube/CRC) that is considered the replacement for the GL3 light EP oil that was used back in the day. GL1 gear lubes can also be used with no ill effect and have no extra pressure additives.

reason for rotorwrech reply is newer grease will attack brass parts. I ordered stuff from Amsoil for the purpose which worked well. OD tranny has 2 places to grease

Go to your local NAPA and pick up some GL1 gear oil.

Yellow metal is not the most important reason to avoid high EP although it is one reason. The sprag clutch (one way clutch) allows the engine to drive the rear axle and then allow the rear axle to freewheel any time the drive train is not under driving force. The sprag uses a roller and ramp type movement to lock & unlock and is steel to steel with both races and all the rollers when locked up. High pressure additives can allow the clutch to slip which will rapidly wear the parts out.

All of the Borg Warner Overdrive maintenance manuals state not to use gear lube with high extra pressure additives but they don't really tell you why. I work on quite a few different models of helicopters and they all have some form of overrunning clutch to allow for auto rotation if the engine quits. They are all very specific about the oil used in them. I use AeroShell 100W in my Mercury car transmissions and they work just fine. This is an aircraft motor oil that uses ashless dispersant for detergent qualities but has no other additives. It is equivalent to SAE 50 motor oil and SAE 90 gear lube. Sta-Lube GL4 multi viscosity oil should work fine since it has only a small amount of EP additive.
