Default Installing inside door panel & handle/crank

On a 39 Ford there two pyramid shaped, compression springs that go between the door frame and the inside door panel. These springs are necessary to install the inside handle and the window crank. My question concerns the springs. Is the large end placed against the door frame or against the inside door panel? Thanks a lot for your response.
