lubricating speedometer
During idling my speedometer hand is bouncing around, and the speedometer is making noise. Are there oil fill locations or does it have to taken apart.

Re: lubricating speedometer
Start by taking it apart and cleaning it well, flush with acetone or other, inspect ends. Use some graphite spray on the inner part and put it together. A start anyway.

Re: lubricating speedometer
First, find out what maybe the cause. Unscrew the cable end from the back of the speedometter housing. If the needle movement stops, its the cable and it needs attention. Carefully remove the cable. Clean it with solvent. I use liquid graphite and lightly coat the cable and reinsert in housing. You will have to probably twist the cable to get it to seat in the gear housing. Add some more liquid graphite into the housing before screwing it back on to the speedometer housing.
If it is not the cable, then Tinker's suggestion will be the next step. |

That's a lot of pressure. ha ha. I like to think that I'm just part of the group process. And as easily ignored. I was taking about the cable. Last edited by Tinker; 08-05-2019 at 12:36 AM. |

Re: lubricating speedometer
Just throwing something out there. One other element is the spedo gear at the "turtle" area. Make sure it's lubed and has a decent gasket?

Re: lubricating speedometer
In neutral, nothings turning. Speedo only turns when rear wheels are turning.

Re: lubricating speedometer
Vibration from engine running is the only thing that could cause speedometer needle to bounce if the wheels are not turning. Turtle is the device at the torque tube that the speedometer cable attaches to.

Re: lubricating speedometer
On similar subject; my speedometer works, but not the odometer. Is there a fix solution?

Re: lubricating speedometer
Hi Faro,
- What model and year is your Ford? - Are both the trip odometer and the main, non-adjustable odometers not working? Glenn |

Re: lubricating speedometer
Not sure what year or make of speedometer but usually you have to either pull out on the knob on the back, or push it in, to set the trip odometer. Try it both ways and see if it works.
