1946 coupe trunk handle

Is there some 'special' tool used to tighten down the large 1 5/8" nut that fixes/holds the deck lid handle into the deck lid? The nut is huge, the space it sits in is way small; Crescent wrench is way too bulky. Because its spring loaded its got to be tight. Thank you

Hello Bill. I've had good luck using channel lock pliers. Slow process but will eventually tighten it down.

Yep, a good sized set of channel lock pliers. Mine was a bear to even get started with out wanting to cross thread.

Yes I used a set on "nut f*#ckers" aka Channel lock pliers.

I couldn't get my channel locks in the small area so I grabbed a screwdriver and tightened it by hitting the screwdriver with the hammer on the edges and it tightened right up.

Great input guys. Thanks again. I have learned that this nut must be cinched down really tight. A loose nut caused my deck lid latch not to release...the handle would turn but not move the latch tongue. Had to pull the back seat and crawl into the trunk...use a screwdriver as a pry bar to release it.

I've never done my '47 but sounds like you can't fit a socket in there. Reason I mention.... we have a place here (Wallace Armor Hdwe) which sells wide range of truck tools etc. They sell very large range of standard, deep well and thin-wall sockets in both US and metric sizes. I've bought 1"+ to 2" sockets there.

What about an old fashion tube spanner. Plumbers still use them on taps etc and there are plenty on epay
