I am working on what appears to be a stock unaltered 1941 Ford car chassis with front and rear suspension and axles.
The drum brakes on all four corners are the type with the hub on the outside of the drum.
I was recently told that this style of drums was used on the post war cars only and that the inside the hub drum was pre war. Add to that the fact that I have a rear end from a 1947 that has the hub inside the drum .....
My investigating seems to show that they were used interchangebly from 1940 on.

What's the real story on this. And was the different style drums an option or just another Ford 'Use it till it's gone" deal.

There were no "outside" hubs used in 1940. That's a fact.
I am not certain when that design was released for production.
The only true way to determine when the "outside" hub design was introduced would be to examine the engineering release, available at the Benson Ford Research Center.

So now we have eliminated 1940 from the equation.
I am beginning to think that whenever these were released for production people may have used them on cars prior to that production date as replacements.

Ford sold the drums and hubs together as an assembly (at least according to the Green Bible). At this level they were interchangeable and it didn't mater which style was sold to the customer. The hubs on the outside didn't get added to the mix until post war.

I was looking thru the book as well but wasn't quite sure what I was seeing

That would explain why the front drums on my 41 Mic'd out as possibly having never been turned. They were most likely replaced at some point and then the car taken out of service.
Put them on the brake lathe and they cleaned up nice with meat to spare.
