Wiring question
Ok onto some minor fixes.
1939 Deluxe - In the glove box (with windup clock). I see three wires that are not connected. One I am guessing is a light for glove box as it is coming up through a hole in bottom left of box. The other two run together and are in close proximity to the clock. Put volt meter on all three with lights on and no power. Any thoughts? |

Re: Wiring question
Can you tell the color codes on the wire? Is it original wiring?

Re: Wiring question
The 1939 deluxe wiring diagram shows a wire to the clock light, but I don't see any wiring to the clock itself. The clock light should be a blue/red wire and works off the same lighting control as the instrument lights.

Re: Wiring question
Could those other two wires be: one for connection to the pillar lights and the other for the cigar lighter?

Re: Wiring question
They appear to be all orginal wires. The one for sure goes direct to bulb in clock.
I will print out the electrical flow chart (thx JSeery) and work my way through to figure them out. I do see a post switch on passenger side and a dome light and that doesn't work either. Windup clock works") |

Re: Wiring question
From the Light Switch the wires split and there is a Black wire and a Blue and Red wire. The Black wire is for Instrument lights and the Blue and Red for the Clock light. There are several possibilities. One, I have found that the wiring diagrams are not always correct. So there could be additional wires not shown or the color coding could be incorrect. Another possibility is that additional wiring may have been added or the wiring modified over the years. A third possibility is the color coding is being miss read. On most of the cars I have worked on the colors have faded and are dirty and oily which makes them very difficult to read. Did I read your post correctly that one of the Blue/Red wires just ends and has 6v on it? If so and it is part of the light circuit you should be able to get it to turn on and off with the light switch (seems like yours saying it has power with the switch off, correct?). And the other wire does not have power with the switch on or off? I would start at the Dimmer Control and work my way toward the Clock Lighting wire to find where the power stops. I know, easier said than done.

Re: Wiring question
The wire that has 6 volts on it goes to the dome light switch
Then to the dome light. This wire is always hot. One goes to clock light it is on when you trun on lights. The other is for cig lighter. Hope this help you. |

Re: Wiring question
It does help. I was able to get the dome light to work with the one hot lead.
I still don't get power from other wire when lights are on to clock. At the clock it looks to be two wires there - assume one is a ground? If I can figure out where the speedo other gauges are powered I can run a new line to the clock. My next step would be to start using volt meter on those and then run a new wire to clock. The cigar lighter has power to it but no power at lighter - I will look on line for new lighter and connect it to that hot lead |

Re: Wiring question
Sounds like your making progress! Think the wire from the gauge lights is a good approach.

Re: Wiring question
Kube on the other 39 Clock post states there is a power wire and a ground wire to the Light. I don't know, I have a 38 standard and it is Clock less! Reread Brooks post, think he is saying the same thing.

Re: Wiring question
Got dome light working")
Now the clock light - there is two wires for it. I hard wired it to a hot lead and it worked - I then tried to wire it to the existing dash lights & they are too hard to get to and do a splice to add clock in. The one wire with an easy splice is the high beam indicator. I leave my high beams on all the time at night - Can I splice into that wire? Its a very small bulb. |

Re: Wiring question
Electrically I think it would work ok, but not the best location. Can't get to the light switch or the dimmer switch? The wiring diagram shows a dimmer on the dash lights.

Re: Wiring question
J thanks for the quick reply -Light switch is on/in the horn. Dimmer appears to have many wires already.
Why not best location? |

Re: Wiring question
I don't think there is an electrical issue, it is just a strange way to wire it. As you say if you always drive with high beams it will work. If the car was sold someone else might not like that option, but then guess they could fix it LOL. Might be your best option until you do some type of major rewire.

Re: Wiring question
ok good food for thought - I'll sleep on it and then take one more look at dimmer.
As I've stated many times - I greatly appreciate all the support this site provides as in this case a special THANKS to J, Brooks & 19Fordy - my hats off to you!!!! |

Re: Wiring question
There should be a Blue/Red wiring coming off of the dimmer that should be the correct wire for the Clock if you can get to it. That would be the ideal place to connect it to. It would also allow the dimmer function to work on the Clock light.

Re: Wiring question
SUCCESS!
Before work this morning, I wired the clock light to the dimmer switch (yes I was sure to ground it to the glove box door - wink). I am one happy camper. I now have a working dome light, a working clock and when lights are on a clock light. Whats next ") Thanks again for the advise! |
