Default 1940 for temp gage

just bought a nice 40 deluxe coupe ,drove it for the first time today,temp gage shows hot. stopped and checked both heads and radiator with inferred gun, temp showed 165 all three locations ,what do you think it may be sender or gage ?thanks.

take the wire off the sender and just quickly touch it to ground, with the ign on of course, if the gauge moves, it is the sender if it doesn't you need a new gauge, but first check to see if there is voltage on the gauge

does your car have two senders. if it does remove the wire on the single term one . drive the car. fi the gauge works the single wire sender is bad
