Default 36 rumble lid lock backer

I have a Vintique handle that works right but there isn't any bracing behind the outer sheetmetal so the locking pawl has nothing to engage, and the outer skin deforms inward as you tighten the nut on the end of the shaft. Does any one have an idea how to rig it to work or the correct piece to put inside the lid cavity, of course that would be the preferable fix. The lid latches correctly and stays shut no problem.
Thanks, JM

I just looked at my 5w deck id and there is factory bracing that angles up from the bottom edge of the lid itself. Then there is a notch that the pawl slides in when in the locked position.Your lid might have been converted from a trunk to a rumble so that bracing would not be there. You might have to take a short piece of tube stock and slide it between the skin of the lid and the latch itself.

If you lid has been converted from trunk to rumble, the bracing should be where the trunk handle hole was located. If the bracing is there, take it out and put at the rumble handle hole.

I don't think possible without taking the lid apart as it is between outer and inner skin + spot welded in.

I just made one for a fiberglass rumble lid. Get a piece of sturdy steel flatstock and cut a hole the diameter of the handle flange so it sits down flush. You then file out the square lock notch. I used some flush pop rivets to hold the plate in place. Obviously you need to rivet inside the diameter of the handle's flange.
