Adjustment Terminology
I'm reading the "Instruction Manual and Repair List" for my 1 1/2 H.P. Hercules stationary engine. When describing how to make adjustments for the carb and oilers the book consistently mentions turning the screw or knob "left" or "right". Since this is a rotary motion rather than a linear motion, it would seem the correct terminology would be "clockwise" and "counter-clockwise" or "anti-clockwise" rather than "left" and "right".
In case you come across the same terminology in any Model A books, just remember turning to the "right" would mean turning "clockwise" and turning to the "left" means "counterclockwise". Last edited by Tom Wesenberg; 05-09-2010 at 08:45 AM. Reason: missed quote marks |

Re: Adjustment Terminology
Tom, always stirring the pot! Ya know, no-one would have trouble with this if you didn't mention it. THINKING is the consternation of many.
Being a southpaw, I'm probably more aware of the early-in-life righty/tighty, lefty/losey minuscule learning curve challenge we all once faced. So, let me ask you this: If my antique Brittish bike carb with a left-hand Wittworth threaded idle mix screw says "Turn it in until the speed drops off" is that left or right when sitting on the seat with the screw facing straight out to your right, and will that make the mixture richer or leaner? What if I lean over to use my left hand on the screwdriver and hold the tool backwards in my hand, with the blade facing up my arm?? I'm so confused!! |
