Stay safe there in Florida. The last time wind passed in NZ I said excuse me. We are lucky here on our little biddy island.

We made it through. No damage other than tree limbs down. Seen some trees uprooted in other parts of the neighborhood. Lost power for 31 hours. Looks like other areas on the coast got hammered bad.

For the Kiwis. I am in Texas on the coast near Houston. I have seen first hand what catastrophic losses a really bad storm can do to a coast line with hurricane Ike which was a direct hit and the eye of the storm passing over it. It largely wiped clean Crystal Beach, TX of any beach houses with a 20 foot storm surge and whole neighborhoods without a trace of any houses left. I have also seen first hand what hurricane Katrina did to New Orleans. From 1968-1973 I lived on Merritt Island, FL which is only a few miles from Cocoa as a high school student. I have been keenly watching the progress of hurricane Mathew although what I know is not first hand. I believe the East Coast of Florida was largely spared from catastrophic damages as they were on the dry side(west side) of the hurricane and the eye stayed offshore. The whole of MI/Cocoa Beach/Cocoa could have been wiped out by a 20 foot storm surge as it stands at sea level. The storm surge was only 3 feet? On the east coast of Florida 99% of beach houses are not elevated and are a sitting duck waiting for a storm to wipe them out. Glad to hear first hand from 38COOP of Cocoa the damages were no more than tree limbs and minor street flooding? Cocoa is at sea level as well and less than 10 miles from the coast. A power outage of only 31 hours is a miracle. Where I lived during Ike which was 30 miles from the coast, the power outage was 1 week or more. On the Texas coast beach houses have been elevated since forever.

Our power was off for a day and a half after Rita northeast of Houston in 2005. We were without power for 10 days after Ike in 2008. I've been hearing reports that many Florida folks are getting power restored rather quickly, fortunately. DD
