Oil Drips

Drip leak sites in the Model A are:
>Engine front crankshaft rope seal;
>Engine Rear main bearing leaks through the radius rod connection on the clutch housing (has no seal);
>Transmission input shaft leaks through the radius rod connection on the clutch housing (has no seal);
>Transmission shafts at the back of the case (no seals);
>Torque tube to differential connection (no seal);
>Lower bolts connecting the rear axle housings to the differential housing;
>Rear axle seals at outboard ends of the axle housings. Worn seal leak oil into the brakes;
>Shock absorber shafts;
>Water pump rear bushing;
>Over zealous greasing of any of the 28 grease fittings;
>Steering gear box at the sector shaft where it goes through the left frame rail;
>Steering gear box into the light switch housing;
>Radiator overflow tube right after an over zealous replenishing of the coolant level in the radiator;
>Leaky radiator;
>Leaks at radiator hose connections;
>Carburetor gasoline drip;
>Gasoline shutoff valve.

There are aftermarket seals / gaskets for the above items with red fonts.

The cliche that, "If it ain't leakin,' its out of oil" is so true.

I bought a bale of these absorbent pads. Now on my second bale in 6 years. Works for cleaning up all sorts of spills, gasoline, oil, solvent, etc. I just place them strategically under the vehicle, catches the drips before they get into the concrete.

A kitty litter tray with disposable liners works well for us. Before driving off, remove and discard the liner leaving the tray clean for the next clean liner and stop.

You can buy dinner trays for a buck or two at the secondhand store.
I put one under the rear axle because it started to drip a few years ago.

On the others hand ......... what if you have no Model A dripping leaks?

Just think of the chore to carry out several garbage cans full of "unused" rugs, old carpet, kitty litter, biscuit pans, serving trays, newspapers, chamber pots, and Pet-Smart puppy wee-wee pads, etc., out to the garbage.

Wishful thinking helps ........ sometimes.

I would love to clear this up in my mind as fact and not myth. I will start with my belief, correct me if I am wrong. The Model A, as designed, leaks. The leaks lubricate the wishbone ball, and there is a special cotter pin that keeps the hole in the flywheel housing open so oil will not collect. There as, leaving a mark on my garage floor.

On the concrete floor I just use a little speedy dry.Maybe a half coffee can full.I leave it under the engine for a bit,then sweep it back to the trans,then back to the rear end.Then back again.It takes years to saturate it to the point it won't absorb.On my wood floors,where the cars are stored most of the time,I let the wood soak it up.Keeps the wood from rusting.One A I had was a real leaker,I used pieces of carpet under that.When they got saturated I used them to start the woodstove.I use saturated speedy dry for that too.

Someone wrote an article not too long ago with photos on how to stop the Model A rear engine leaks by introducing some alterations in the rear bearing area.

How long ago?

Just received a 2016 Model A parts catalog .... appears my new 2015 catalog arrived about (3) months ago ...... months are flying like weeks ...... must be Global Warming accelerating the Earth's Rotation.

I tried that trick, once, the neat thing about it was that once I started the engine I didn't have to sweep it up, it was gone. Later I found that I had a huge area to sweep to get all or most of that speedy dry out of the garage.

Actually the top (lid) of large plastic storage bin's works well..

Only one problem with Kitty litter, I you have a well trained cat, ( I do), they will use it. Could not figure out why my model a drippings smelled funny! Another problem is you will have a greasy cat!
