I have installed a couple on customer's cars and if set/timed correctly, they work quite well. I have also replaced the main bearings on four engines that either the owner or someone else installed the kit where they had not set the timing correctly. If you install one, I suggest you use a timing light to verify the resulting timing at 2200 rpm. Check it twice and then listen carefully for any knocking.
28 degrees max for a standard compression head and less advance for higher compression heads.

On one installation, I needed to enlarge the hole for the lower distributor shaft in the copper head gasket. The lower shaft was rubbing on the gasket and would not respond correctly to changes in rpm. I used a tapered drift punch to open it up with hand pressure.
Good Day!

I had an issue during the installation where the flat spring somehow was the wrong shape. Whether it came that way from the factory, or was bent in shipping, or I bent it without noticing, I dunno. Nu-Rex were very nice and sent me a new one.

For some more info on the Phillips Auto Spark Control and the Nu-Rex see The Ford Garage;

There was another thread on Ford Barn but I can not seem to find it.

I do have a Nu-Rex on my car and I really like it. My initial timing is set retarded to limit total timing to 28° as Dave in MN suggested.

I run a distributor with points and coil and standard advance mechanism. The compression readings (cold) are all about 110 psi and I have a down draught carb and modified cam. I have found that setting the timing at TDC is WAY too far advanced. My solution was to set it retarded at idle so the advance didn't end up too much. 15-20 degrees retarded at idle is about right and the timing light shows about 8 # advance at the fully advanced position. I've stuck with the manual timing adjustment so I retain control over it. On the road, the engine is very sensitive to timing adjustments so to use an automatic advance system, I'd have one heck of a job to get the timing just right.
All that said, the first of their auto advance jiggers I saw was on a customer's car but he had diddled with it and put it back together the wrong way around. It retarded when it should have advanced. I spoke to Nurex about it and they asked me to send it to them. I did and they sent it back assembled correctly all for no charge. Can't complain about that service!
