I'm not certain, but I think they started in 1940.

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
As a 39 Merc owner myself, would be real interested in a rear sway bar application! Anyone have more info?

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
You don't see them on the rear very often as they were never installed at the factory.

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
Ford prepped for a rear axle track bar or panhard bar in 1941 and I think they may have been used in 1942 for sedan delivery and station wagons but production was cut short. They were definitely in post war production for passenger cars.

Good morning Clem. I am happy You?
Call it whatever you or others may so desire. Your Merc did not leave the factory with a rear "sway" bar.

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
Kube
Of course, you were correct. I bow to the Master. Back in 1956 I put a sway bar on my that 40merc. I had 6 inch shackles to lower the rear end and she needed a rear sway bar. The 40Merc now does have a front bar. double thanks to you for steering me to crawling under the 40Merc which I love to do to any car. The left rear shock arm had the link straight away from the shock arm...Not right. Link threads were damaged. Fixed but not installed. Clem kube |

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
Some early speed catalogs offered them in conjunction with long rear shackles for lowering.
Long rear shackles without a sway bar and there's never a dull moment. Like a labrador on linoleum |

We have three Labs. Love em all. When they come in for dinner - we step aside. They go around the corner in the living area so fast they at times tip over sideways. I think I should build a "banked curve" in to the hardwood floor. Thanks for the smile!!!

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
longer shackles that could prove interesting as i can actually feel a certain amount of shackle shimmy with standards I guess thats why they recommend to install tube shocks at an angel so as to control this as well as vertical movement

Re: Rear panhard rod 39 merc
By themselves, tube shocks at an angle don't help much when you have long shackles.
