Just having a moment......
I have forgotten what part of the Universal Joint Cover goes on the top when reassembling. Left or right? Can someone remind me please? Thanks |

Re: Universal Joint Cover
another thing to keep in mind is there are 2 different transmission rear bearing retainers with different bolt patterns, make sure they match up.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
U-Joint Cover Gasket
I have been trying to figure out a better solution to the rectangular cork gasket that leaks at the back of the transmission in the clam shell that covers the U-Joint. I found a rubber gasket that is 5/16 x 5/16 that is used for industrail hose couplings. It is only 2 inches in side diameter so it does have to be cut at the joint between the top and bottom of the clam shell. They do have a 4 inch gasket, but it is 5/16 by 3/8 and that makes the fit too tight and it will not squish down any. They also told me that they use E6800 sealer for areas like the joint between the clam shells. We put one together and clamped on the end of a drive shaft and, with a little grease, it does feel really good. I have not yet installed my motor and transmission to be sure that this solution will work, but it sure looks better than the cork solution. The number on the gasket is 20YST BUNA 5/16 gasket, $1.90 each. These gaskets are used for quick coupling industrial hoses

Re: Universal Joint Cover
on the old style u-joint/ball cover there is an oiling gallery along the top edge of the old style flanges.
if it were i, unless the cross shaft is being used, i would seal those inside gallery's incase there is seepage. but i have always change that housing for the newer style.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
How about a big O-ring? They come in various thicknesses and diameters.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
I have looked, it needs to be 3 3/4 outside dimension and 5/16 thick. I have checked with two industrial pipe places and the square one is the only one I have found so far. See if you can find anything.

Try an oilfield supply place.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
The original seal there was likely Felt originally. I'm not sure why they went to cork. The later Fords used felt up to 1948 but the cork is an ever present replacement. It's basically just a dust seal.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
My ball cap does not leak. I installed it with original gaskets and cork seal.

Re: Universal Joint Cover
Either there is something wrong with it or it must be dry!
