Default Generator question 27 T

The generator in the photo came off a 27 T. There is a wire protruding out of the end band next to the nut/bolt that attaches to a cut out. I don't think a cut out has been on this generator in a long time. And no-the engine was NOT running when we got it. It was brought in with the vehicle and bags full of parts. Can anyone advise what the wire might be for.??

It is not stock so would be a guess by anyone but a competent 3 brush generator repair person that may have see this before. But as I am not fully versed in all things generator, I would guess that one end of the windings is grounded like the Model A generator instead of the thru the brush inside. But?

Hard to tell by the picture but that extra wire is typically a field wire that you would take to ground, i.e tie it to cutout mounting screw.
