'35 Coupe: What would you bolt in first?

I've rebuilt most of the major components for my '35 coupe: engine, trans, steering, etc. They're not yet in the car. As soon as I install a new ring and pinion in my banjo, I get to start putting it all back together.


So if you had all this stuff sitting on your shop floor, what would you bolt in first? The banjo/torque tube assembly? Or the engine and trans? (NOTE: the front suspension is already in; axle, spring, wishbone, brakes, etc)

I always have the differential / axle housings / torque tube assembly fitted to the chassis before I install the engine / transmission assembly.
In fact, just yesterday I'd installed the engine / trans. assembly to the 40 chassis I'm building. One man (just me) it took but minutes to align with the driveshaft and set down on the mount biscuits.

Like Mike, my rear axles are always in place before installing an engine/transmission assembly.

To save yourself some later contortions and X-rated utterances, I suggest that you install the steering gear box and brake and clutch pedal assembly before installing the engine. You'll also be glad if you install the left side exhaust manifold on the engine block before installing the engine/transmission assembly in the chassis. The same goes for the starter motor and the brake cross shaft, if you are retaining the original mechanical brakes.

Thanks! Pedals are in and I was going to bolt in the steering first, too, but hadn't thought beyond that. I've converted to juice brakes.

I’ve had to put the motor and transmission in first because we’re still waiting on my Columbia rear axle parts. But it’s easy to roll the axle into position and with no body on the frame it’s fairly straight forward process. Have you done a body and front panels mockup yet to check all the alignment of the panels?

I left the body on the chassis.
