32 stock v8 tudor steering very hard
My 32 model 18 steers like a lumber wagon..is the problem 13:1 or 15:1 steer box gears ?? how about teflon tie rod end stuff ? anyone with experience with this issue ?? thanks in advnce..sc

I assume you have plenty of lubricant in the steering box? Is there another car nearby that you could test drive? They are definitely not a modern car with power steering but yours sounds like there is a problem.

They aren't easy , especially if modern radial tires or under inflated bias or like me old tire worn out muscles !

I had a 32 Tudor that I put 15,000+ miles including a cross country from Ma. to Hood River Qregon . Mn. Meet & Georgia meet. I had rebuilt all sterring pcs and it worked O.Kfor me.. I would start by greasing all steering parts, King pins , tie rod ends , fill the steering box etc. Jack up and be sure the grease is getting th King pins both top & bottom. I also put the roller bearing in the top of the steering col. after removint the original hard rubber pieces. Worked for for me. After all is greased be sure to turn the wheel all the way in both directions and then re-do the king pins to be sure it is getting thrugh to all areas. jmo. Kx

Also use corn head grease in the box,it made the steering easier than when I filled it with gear oil in my 33

I have had a bunch of spindles where the thrust bearing seised up and wore the top of the spindle. When that happens, the spindle moves up and drags on the bottom of the axle. Check for clearance between the bottom of the axle and the top of the lower spindle lug.

The roller bearing isn't difficult to install with the right bearings and once you have the tube removed and the all of the old rubber removed. Some suppliers of the bearing set up specifically for this purpose have components that are slightly oversize and have to be unduly forced into the steering column tube, especially in '32 tubes. Ask for the outside diameter dimensions before buying.

I am going to do this job on my 32 Tudor. I have searched the forum briefly and not found a post which "walks" the reader through the process from beginning to end, so I will try to do a good job with photos etc.
I do not have a steering wheel puller, so something will have to be made to do this job. Then the correct bearing will have to be sourced. Thank you David, I will measure the ID of the column tube. I suppose it is possible there is not a bearing which is an exact fit, and some machining will be necessary, but I hope not. Any more advice before I start would be most welcome! |

Top bearing - Remove light rod and steering wheel. Use 1/8th inch drill and tear up old rubber bearing, then use vacuum tube which will fit over steering shaft and clean out crumbs from rubber bearing. Hardware store can supply a wheelbarrow bearing which fits without machining and which has a flange to keep it from sliding down the tube. Install bearing, steering wheel and light rod and you are done. Bearing cost about $5.

Steering wheel might prove to be a bear. As I recall, I drilled and tapped a pair of 5/16-18 holes at 180º from one another into the metal portion of the steering wheel hub. I was then able to use a readily available steering wheel puller.

I have often used a bearing seperator with no damage to anything. It is a split collar that I place under the wheel plus some rags. I two jaw puller then can be used to pull on the seperator.
$10-15 or so at Harbour freight. Get the big one. |

Removing steering wheel: After the removal of the light rod, back the nut off on the steering shaft until the nut is flush with the end of the shaft. Then cradle the wheel in one arm firmly and hit the end of the shaft and nut with a BFH. If that doesn’t work, then drill and tap the hub for a puller. As a side note, while you have the light switch apart at the bottom of the steering gear, clean the contacts!!!!!!

When you hit the shaft with the BFH you are risking deforming the threads and for sure trying to damage the bearings in the steering box. There is nothing to absorb the blow except the lower worm bearing.
The bearing separator is guarantied to get the wheel off and not hurt anything. |

Thanks for the replys, I can see whats involved now. I dont have any access to club pullers in the UK, but I dont see why we cant come up with something using a bearing separator. I will let you know how I get on.
