Default 53 8ba oil filter question

Do, my 39 has had a transplant at one time as she has a 53 8ba in her. I'm not very rehearsed on these flathead and wondering about the oil filter setup. This pic is of the reservoir with the cap off. There is no filter in there. I assume the filter I purchased from Dennis Carpenter is correct for this setup?

That element sure looks right. Given the pampered lives most of these cars lead, I am of the opinion that with regular oil and filter changes, the bypass system may be better suited for normal use than a partial full flow conversion.

should be correct but check how snug the center seal is to the riser tube as ive found there are 2 elements that will fit the housing one the center is to big and not correct the correct one is a snug fit on the center tube

Looks right. Should be a drain for the canister on the bottom side.

Does the Carpenter filter have a part#? The NAPA ones I use are #1006 and I think WIX # is 51006. That one looks right, I agree the center needs to fit tight on the center tube......Mark

The filter looks to be correct but, the interior of your metal case that holds the filter looks different than mine. Perhaps I don't understand the question posed. This is the partial OEM oil filter set up.

Ya' know, after looking at the interior of his filter again. it appears to have one of those funky "permanent" cleanable filter units in it.

I've never seen one specifically for a flathead, though.

Nah...it's partly full of oil and that's the reflection we're seeing.

And of course the old oil will be removed before installing the new filter.

One may have to resort to a turkey baster to suck out the old oil.
No need to add new oil to filter, running the engine after securing the cover will fill it.

Then what's that ring of what looks like metal that seems to be inserted in the filter housing? There also seems to be some kind of retainer holding it in place?

I agree with Tubman, I also think that the inside should look like the picture shown by 19Fordy

the new filter is correct, but the tin thing in the bottom of the housing is not supposed to be there. perhaps one of those jc whitney toilet paper things or whatever, take it out and show us what the bottom of the canister looks like. it should have a spring in the bottom, with a smooth machined washer on top that seats on the bottom of the new filter

Feeling argumentative, huh? When the OP posts again he's going to tell us the pic is just oil and reflection...no metal ring or retainer.

Looking at it carefully again, you may be right. It may be one of them "optical Illusions". I'm really not sure.

Must say that when I first looked at it, it looked like a reflection of oil, BUT then again?

If it is the oil, I'd be worried. The only thing that can make oil that color is water.

Or, maybe the camera is playing tricks again.

Perhaps it is an adapter for using a toilet paper roll as a filter.

No metal ring or retainer in there. The piece a 2:00 is the port hole. This is nothing but the reflection of oil, and apparently coolant....

You are correct. i pulled out the turkey baster to pull off the oil and sure enough, there is green coolant in there! UGH.... Now, off to start a new thread...
