Squeaky belt
Does anyone have any idea as to somehow to stop a fan belt from squeaking? I have adjusted the tension and is will go away for a short time with a shot of WD 40, it comes back. Its a Napa belt going to get a Gates soon.

Re: Squeaky belt
Generally a squeaky belt is gonna be a squeaky belt. How old is it? Does it feel hard?

Re: Squeaky belt
Use spray on belt dressing instead of WD-40. I have heard that soap works too.

Glue or staple 180 grit paper on a paint paddle and CAREFULLY rough the surface. G.M.

Re: Squeaky belt
Is it the correct belt? An industrial application 'B' section belt is often used, [I use them myself], But, really they are not correct for this application. Close, but not right. Genuine Ford belts are wider and have a different 'vee' angle, which means running incorrect belt on 70 year old pulleys that are showing wear patterns in the groove results in a mere point contact each side of belt, instead of full width contact. Check all your pulleys for wear, in my experience the pulley most likely to wear is on the generator, using belt dressings etc is not really fixing the problem. Brian

Re: Squeaky belt
I use "B" belts on all my old Fords with no problems. Every once in a while you may hear what sounds like a bad generator bearing. I shoot a shot of what ever can is close and it go's away and a lot of times don't come back. I have tried belt dressing on various vehicles with belt noise and never had a lasting effect. I find taking the glaze of the belt is more perminate but can be dangerous. G.M.

Re: Squeaky belt
I have been using the Napa belt and beleive they are Gates made. Don't buy the Bob Drake Ford script ones, they are supposedly concourse correct but not the correct size, look good hanging on the wall about it.
