Default Clockwork Horn

Is this a Model A horn? It sounds right and looks about right but it is mechanical rather than electric. It appears to have a bracket for a bolt on attachment. It works but the return spring carrier is broken and has to be reset manually. The only legible inscription on the tag is "R-10".

Questions: What is it? Where can I look for repair parts?

Thanks, Jerry

That's an after-market horn, not original to the Model A. I have only seen them installed so that they are foot operated. It's an interesting item and I don't think I've ever seen one at a swap.

They used them on the door of Model T Fords. Pep Boys, Sears, Monkey Ward, & etc.

It looks like a Stewart Warner looking at the mount. If so it should have a pretty good gear box in it and should be easy to get going. If I remember and I doubt it <grin> it should be a 145A?

I have one of those. Years ago, before caller ID, we kept one near the phone, so when an obscene call came in, we could blast them in the ear.

Take it apart and clean the gears and plunger. Grease and oil it well. They make a great sound. Clackson made many horns like that. usually there is a brass plaque on the cover.Clem

Some early trucks used these horns. I had a 1909 Autocar 2 ton coal truck, Open C cab, 2 cylinder engine, acetelyne lamps, the only wiring on the entire truck was the two spark plug wires from magneto and the "P" lead. Looked like the exact same horn.

If you want to see and hear one of these horns in action, watch "The Absent-Minded Professor." He had one of these horns on his flying Model T.
