Default Stoneguards

When did stoneguards become an option for Model A's. I am entering my 1931 deluxe roadster in a concours event and don't know if this option is ok with their judging standards.

It was sold as an aftermarket accessory.

The connotation a stone guard gives is it's hiding an ugly / non-original radiator because they have little to no functional value in the current era.

Stone guards were sold as accessories long before the Model A was thought up.

When I lived in Iowa, we installed stone guards to keep the pheasants from damaging the radiator when/if you hit one.

Or, like me, you have an original radiator and you don’t want it damaged!

Living in Western Wa. a stone guard can be very useful if you drive your Model A on the highways, especially US HWY 2. If I make it two yrs, W/O a chipped windshield I feel lucky. Lots of gravel trucks which are always throwing up rocks.

JD I did that same thing!

Figured with skilled radiator guys out there like Berg's or even a Brassworks radiator I'll take a chance. I've been driving Model A Fords since 1971 and have never had an incident.

NOW watch I'll take one for the team in the radiator in July, now that I said that

I have wondered if the stone guard actually does anything for me but I see enough stones and mud balls thrown up on the highway that I have kept mine. I did paint the grate section black so you can see the original shape of the radiator behind it. Looks much better.
