46 ignition coil
I just gave my 46 some ignition love. New wires, cap, rotor, resistor, and best of all a newly rebuilt distributor from Bubba's. My car runs the best that it ever has. Only problem is that it wont start when hot, did this before. lights right off after it cools down a bit. It has an original ford coil with the terminals on top and the coil wire coming out the bottom. I will probably have this coil rebuilt, but for the meantime what 6 volt coil should I use. Jim, do you have a napa part #. Thanks, Rich

Re: 46 ignition coil
Get a coil for a 49 - 53 Ford and bypass your resistor under the dash.

Re: 46 ignition coil
NAPA does not have the original style coil. You can convert to the common can style coil.....if 6V you eliminate the original resistor an wire straight to the coil. If you’ve gone to 12V, put a regular 1.4 ohm ballast resistor in series to the coil to reduce the voltage (you do that when the new 12V coil is the externally resisted type).
If 6V the positive side of the coil is connected to the distributor. If 12V you’ll connect the negative side of the coil to the distributor. You’ll have to add some sort of coil mounting bracket to the engine for the can type coil. None of the above modification appears stock. If that matters to you, the alternative to this plan is to install a fresh rebuilt coil of the original 1GA type, keeping the original resistor in the circuit. We have a couple of the rebuilt types in stock.

Re: 46 ignition coil
I just picked up a 49 to 53 internally resisted ? coil and installed it in my 46. I bypassed the under dash resistor. I barely touched the button and it lit right off. It is raining right now so a trial run is not in order tonight. We will see tomorrow. Thanks guys Rich

Re: 46 ignition coil
some times my 46 w/original coil won't start, put a later model 6v coil on and had same problem. I ran a jumper off a toggle switch to the coil and hit it briefly to start when needed. problem solved. Sometimes your starter demands so much amperage the coil does not get what it needs to spark the ignition through the resistor.

Re: 46 ignition coil
That's the idea behind the later starter solenoids with the ballast resistor bypass.
