Replacement 6V horn
My '39 came with the long dual trumpet horns. They sound great. They were mounted to the drivers side inner fender and take up a lot of room. I'm installing a rebuilt engine and want to clean up the engine compartment. Any suggestions on what to use for a cleaner installation and still be heard?

Re: Replacement 6V horn
I personally think that the long trumpet horns look great in the engine compartment. They give it a classy look that you cannot get with the smaller modern horns.

I third it,they are classy back when a car manufacture did not scrimp on parts, plastic horns came later.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
Oh, you guys. I'd love to keep them for the sound, but I want the engine to be the focal point. Anyone using an Autoloc 6v Ooogah horn?

I'd like the focal point to be the engine, not the horns. I'm looking for something else myself. Joe |

Re: Replacement 6V horn
I installed this little horn near the stock horn relay using a stock hole in the frame.
It's a 6V horn and sounds different when you run 12 V through it. Loud but unobtrusive. |

Re: Replacement 6V horn
A couple of thoughts, those trumpet horns are way cool. And what a sound. Detail the horns, nice paint, and some pinstripping. I'm running a stock 49 horn on 12 volts and it is unique sounding. Don't put the Japanese pickup horn that someone did in their old Ford, geez, just because it was free.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
I agree with the trumpet guys. "Ooogah" horns belong on Model A's. You have too nice a car to install a non stock horn!!

Re: Replacement 6V horn
If you want the engine to be the focal point, remove it and put it on an engine stand and park the coupe around the corner. My 2¢. LOL

Re: Replacement 6V horn
Move your trumpet horns to under the floor or running board and get a longer wire to the horns and they will still work and won't be seen.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
My 48 Coupe originally came with "snail horns" that were behind the grill. Among the parts that came with my car was a set of stuffed trumpet horns from a 46 parts car. I removed the guts from the snails and put them in the trumpets because I like them too. Not stock but they do look cool. If you want to go for the clean engine bay look you could go for later 6 v snails ,they still sound good and could easily be placed behind the grill of your car.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
This is my plan. I just need to get the car up on the lift and see where's a good spot. Thanks for all the replies.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
Gene, see if you can mount the horns up under the hood on the same side on a good fabricated mounting. They will go up with the hood when you lift it up and leave the engine bay clear and tidy. You would have to extend the wiring harness up close to the hood hinge. Some 30s to 50s cars had this set up from new. You still will have those fantastic original FORD horns. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
X2 if you must. Although I question the logic of your "Focal Point". After a week or two of Gee Whiz comments and the associated 'eye-candy' looks, the thoughtful eye might take some comfort in the pleasant lines, the elegant and thoughtful design that you would consign to a dark corner. For what real reason... for a momentary infatuation. I'd like to say 'Cheap Thrill' but I know how much these engines cost.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
I do not know if these would be options for you, but the 35-37 pickup horns that mounted on the outside are small enough to go elsewhere...brackets to mount them would be very simple to make. I have a set of NOS 6-v Sparton horns out in the shop somewhere that are not trumpet type...I do not think they are Ford, but are certainly smaller and might fit in a variety of places where they would not be casually visible.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
After some thought I decided to use my trumpet horns. After I cleaned them, painted them, and redid the mounting brkt. They look good.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
Factory designers didn't put the dual horns in as a focal point. Rather than detract, they added their small beauty as a final touch. A beautiful blue hardtop body is the focal point. The classic red tail light is the accent. Henry's men put it together with the entire field of vision in mind.

Re: Replacement 6V horn
The horns were painted black originally and blended in with the inner fenders.
Paint your block a brighter green than the dull original color, and fit some polished alloy heads, and intake manifold. This will help make the engine the focal point. |
