When you put the fitting on the tube, does the tube extend beyond the end of the fitting? If it does not then the fitting will not pinch the tube when it is tightened.

51 Merc-ct, it does but won't tighten. I think its the wrong fitting, as it is different than the one that goes to the Carb. Does anyone sell the fittings?

It should look like the top pic.
I have in the past fixed one by using a brake line fitting plus a ferrule as in lower pic.

The fittings were used till clear up into the 60s as long as they still used the copper plated steel pipe. The part number changed at least once. The last Ford P/N was 351112S.

How do threads on fitting look? Make sure you are not cross threading the fitting. These require a bit of finesse to get them started correctly as the line wants to pull them sideways.

I had the same problem. I started the fitting but just before I started to feel resistance I pushed the line in as far as I could and then tightened. Works fine.
