Default TT Rear End Questions

Hi-
I am working on a TT that has not been started in 10 years.
I have a number of questions about the rear end.
I have 600 weight oil, should I use that?
How much oil should the rear end take? (Up to the bottom of the fill hole?)
What is the third plug, up near the worm gear, used for.
I have used the search function and end up with tons of interesting but off topic information.
Thanks

Default Re: TT Rear End Questions

The top plug is a service port for pre-oil of the worm thrust bearing assembly from what I understand. Not all TT rear axles have that top plug since it was added later. It would take a long time to fill the case from there so most just pour enough in there to pre-lube, then the fill hole on the back of ring would be for completing the service fill after draining old oil.

Ford used 600W which was a lubricant that was associated with worm gear drives and steam cylinders back in the day. Another term is Compound Gear Lube since it is compounded with animal fat or tallow instead of EP additives. Mobil W600 and Lubriplate SPO 277 are modern equivalents.

Thank you so much!
Fill to the bottom of the drain plug or a finger’s tip below?
