Default Over 7 qts of oil!!!

Help!
I posted early today about 8BA canister lid leak…(I’m on hold waiting for new gasket).

Yesterday when I started the car the oil canister began leaking like crazy. Unfortunately, I didn’t realize it until my floor was covered in oil.

I cleaned up the floor, put 4 qts, nothing showed in dip stick. Added another qt, still nothing, added yet another (making 6) and dipstick barely showed oil at bottom of indicator.

So I just now drained all of the oil and ended up with over 7 quarts!

Is there a scenario where an 8BA has over 7 quarts of oil and is barely registering on the dip stick?

Previous owner rebuilt the motor. Dipstick showed full when I purchased car in May and I’ve run it and driven it sparingly since then.

I would put in 5 quarts and then mark the dipstick with a file or a punch.

Either the tube is too long or the dipstick is too short. Tube should be 8 21/64" long

Has there been damage to engine from running it overfilled?

There have been numerous oil leaks—now I know why!

Dipstick tube is 10 1/8”
Dipstick is 13 7/8” to the shoulder.

Is this the correct set up?

Also, are the felt (?) washers which seal the dipstick to the tube necessary (and available ?)

Do you know what oil pan you have on your 8BA? The '49-'51 Mercury rear sump pan holds 5 qts and I'm pretty sure the '48-'52/'53 truck pan also is a 5 qt pan, so total would be 6 qts with a filter.

Bob - my 1952 F1 has the original 8BA engine in it. I changed the oil this past spring & it took 5 quarts w/the filter. The owners manual says 5 quarts, also.

Felt seal not necessary. Don't see what purpose it serves. And it would change the dipstick level by only about 1/16". Negligible.
Don't think available from the usual vendors.
Not necessary, but I still got obsessive one day and made a felt seal. Cut a slot in a 3/4" round self-stick furniture pad. Available at every hardware store.
Think I got that idea from someone on this forum.

I to also have a dip stick that is not accurate. I happen to have the pan off right now for another problem and your question got me thinking on the oil capacity of the pan. With the pan level, 5 quartz fills the pan to the bottom on the windage tray. The crank and rod bolts miss the windage tray by roughly 1/2". You don't want to overfill the pan and have the rotating mass splashing in the oil, I would say 5 quartz is the max you want to fill. I am not taking in account the motor running will pump oil through the system, making the level in the pan obviously lower.
I do not at this time have an oil filter, so you need to add for that.

Does your pan look like this? The other picture is with 5 quartz of oil in the pan

The oil pan shown in solidaxle's post is an oil pan from a 51 Merc. 5qts for that pan is correct, add 1 more if you are running a filter

Solidaxle is 100% correct re: that Merc. oil pan. 8BA Fords are different.

I've tried to find info on truck pan capcity without success so I'll take your word for it. Strange Trucks would not use more oil capacity than pass cars, except for the '49-'51 Mercs. I know the F-1 pan I have looks like it would hold at least 5 quarts.

When I was in High School I would try to keep oil up to the empty mark.

I will also add that if I remember correctly , the oil pump pick up that is used with the 50-51 Merc pans is different than the other 8ba oil pump pick-ups , in that it is "hooded" to match the windage tray

Solidaxle, the pan on mine is different than your photo….Drain is in center, not on the side.
