Default O.T. 1934 Chevy Bearings

I just got a set of 1934 Chevy 6 bearings done.

My Album space has been full for 2 or 3 years.

Herm.

Nice work! Were the main bearings grooved with a Dremel or similar device?

It always amazed me how Chevy didn't seem to care about reciprocating weight! What with the pinch bolts on the wristpins and cast iron pistons, no wonder they were known as "Babbitt beaters"!

Herm, I have several of the Federal Mogul re-babbitted rods for early 216 rods. The gmpartswiki is down so I have not been able to look up the part numbers. Hoping it is back up soon so I can look up the years on them and some other parts. Rod

Actually the Chevy cast iron pistons weren't as heavy as a guy would think.
I don't recall where I read the piston weight, but maybe in an older Motor's Manual.

Model T's and stationary engines are another matter, and their cast iron pistons are very heavy.

Rowdy, there are 2 or 3 different widths in the 216's, you can go by the forging numbers most if the time, but some of the rods have been cut down in width when the companies that rebuilt the rods and run out of the right cores, so just watch.

I have the forge number list if you need to find out something, on that order.

The previous comment about the early Chev six being a "babbitt beater" had to do with more than the piston weight, mainly a funky oiling system and six cylinders supported by only 3 main bearings. They were actually a good motor if you didn't race them too hard. The worn bearing problems could drive you crazy because the noise would come and go. You could pull the pan and find equal wear on all the rod bearings, yet only one of them would be making noise, so which one? Button it back up and the noise would start up again, then disappear for weeks before starting back up. It might later throw a rod on a day when it was making no noise at all.

Herm will look for the forging numbers again. I had looked them up in the gmpartswiki a while back. The notebook seems to be lost. The website has not worked in atleast 3 weeks. Hope it is not gone for good as I still have a lot to look up. Near imposible before that sight to find accurate info. Rod
