When removing the front shocks on a 40 Ford sedan can it be done with the cars weight on the ground or should the work be done on a hoist ? Kenny C

Re: Front Shock Removal
Partially supported on jackstands for accessibility and for flexibility, being halfway between the two extremes.

Hey Kenny ..... Welcome to The 'Barn. Keep in mind that automobile shocks, especially shocks as old as we're discussing here were never designed to support even one pound of vehicle weight. All that shocks are designed to do is control or dampen the movement of suspension components. So, wherever that shock is sitting when you decide to move it from it's current resting spot, it should have NO preload on it and it would be safe to move (or not move) the shock or suspension to any position that suits your fancy. Re: Front Shock Removal
V8 hit the nail on the head. Use jackstands to take the load off the shocks.
