Default 51 Merc into 1940 fordor flywheel clutch questiond

I have stock 1940 Fordor which I have owned since 1968. Haven't driven in 30+ yrs.

want to install hopped up 1951 Merc flathead in it and mate to the column shift 1940 3 speed.
what flywheel and pressure plate do I use? will the ones off the 1940 flathead work? Waht bellhousing and starter plate fits this application?
Thanks for your help

You can only use an 8ba flywheel. Others will chime in about your other questions.

By "8BA" do you mean specifically a '49-'51 Ford flywheel or just a generic post '48 flywheel. I believe the proper combination is the Merc flywheel and pressure plate and the appropriate disc (I has been 30 years since I did this; I do know it can be done mixing and matching stock parts.)

sactopv: Read all this:

You need to use the 1949-51 Merc flywheel, pressure plate and full bell housing with the matching starter plate. You can use the stock 40 throwout bearing. I have an 8BA/8CM in my 40 with the stock 40 transmission. You also need the 49-51 Merc rear sump oil pan or an early Ford pick up rear sump oil pan.

The 49 through early 1951 all used the same 1 3/8" 10-spline as the early Ford. Sometime around February of 1951, the change to the 1-inch 10-spline started along with the big cast iron bell housing.

A person needs the pressed steel half bell of the earlier 1949-E51 Mercury cars. The 49-E51 Borg & Beck clutch can be used or a Ford flywheel can be re-drilled for a Long type clutch of either the 9-inch or 10-inch variety for earlt Fords with the 1 3/8" 10-spline.
