Trying to help a friend on Fenton headers for a 1950 ford convertible! OK I know there's a fit problem on the drivers side with the steering box. I have installed these on my 39 pu with some fitting ! Can I get them to work on the 1950 conv. ? Does anyone have suggestions re this installation and also where can I get a set of pipes made that will fit. Is there a different header that would be better? Thanks Frank pkny

I just bought headers and complete dual exhaust system from Reds Headers for my 35 coupe. Had the tubular headers Jet Hot Coated. Have not attempted to install this system yet, but everything sure looks nice.

Been running my Jet Hot coated tubular headers for a little over 3 years now. Look as good as the day I put them on. Nice thing about tubular is they can be modified to fit quite easily. I've heard some horror stories about making Fentons fit some applications.

No experience with putting duals on a shoebox, but I have fitted Fentons to other year early Ford FH V8's and felt I had to do too much grinding, cutting and fitting to make them clear the steering box.
You asked if there was a different header that would fit better, so in my opinion, I believe Reds tubular headers would fit/work better than Fentons, probably on any early Ford with a FH V8 engine.

Someone makes the Factory driverside exhaust manafold that was used in the 1953 optiomal duals and police cars. It might fit, someone here might know who makes them. I'd like to get one my self.

These are the LH optional manifolds Ol'Ron is talking about. Originals seem to have become near impossible to find.

I have Fentons on my '51 club coupe and have had them for the last 25 years. They are close to the steering box, but they are in there and work well. I think the fact that they have been there this long tells you why people like them. I'm sorry I can't tell you what had to be done to make them fit, as the installation was done at a Midas shop owned by a friend. All I know is that it took a day, and nobody there mentioned having any kind of problem. As a matter of fact, I didn't know they "didn't fit" shoeboxes until I read it on the H.A.M.B.

I also had them on a '50 Merc in my '36 3 window. I put those in myself and got them in by swapping in a '37 steering gear and some judicious grinding on the headers themselves and the steering box.

Grinding on the heads?? I put Fentons on my '35 tudor sedan with '37 steering box. It required a lot of grinding on the headers and a little on the steering box, but nothing on the heads. I now wish I had done Reds Headers instead.

Ooops! Headers, not heads; corrected the original post. Once they're on, they're great. Had noise, fitment, and durability problems with tubular headers years ago, and try to avoid them. Has Red done something different to make his current ones better?

have fentons on my 39 std with an 8ba, just had to have the flanges milled, tight, but fits.

I'm working on a '50 club coupe and am going to use Pat Rooney's LH manifold with John Kepich's (?) pipes and mufflers. Sorry I can't tell you about installation but Pat copied the LH manifold that Ford installed on police cars of the era. I understand there were two different configurations, '49-'51 and '52-'53.
I first ordered the Drake manifold and found it to be unacceptable. The rear outlet was no bigger than exhaust ports coming out of the engine. Pat's unit better matches the size of the exhaust pipe. By the way, Shoe Box Central sells Pat's manifold.

Go to Red's Headers, he'll have the right headers and be able to bend up the exhaust system to match.

Last time I talked to Red's Headers they didn't make them to fit a Shoebox....Mark

i dont remember, i just told the machinist to mill as much as he would feel comfortable with.
