Default Massachusetts YOM plates?

Unclear this is the right place for this, but I'll ask anyway:

I'm picking up a 1950 Ford F1 (Hot Rod) truck. It would be great if I could put 1950 plates on it. I'm in Massachusetts. Anybody got a source for YOM plates which would fill the bill?

Not that year.. I didn't know they did YOM plates out there. I have some old Mass plates nailed up on my shop beams but maybe '33 and '34.

Keep your eye on Ebay. Just looked and got up to page 8. Found 49 and 51 plates but no 50. I also have some old plates buried in the garage but not likely any Ma. I'll check into it though. You can also get repo YOM plates but DMV may not accept them in your state. They don't in Wa.

Check to make sure you can use them in Mass. The last Sunday of the month, there’s a swap meet at New England Dragway in Eppng NH. There’s a guy there that sells a lot of antique plates.......Mark

Thanks!

Mass does allow YOM plates, but they must be original, no reproductions.

I also found those '49 and '51 plates on ebay

Good idea on the swap meets. I'll keep scrounging...

You can use them in Mass but you must have a plate where the number is not being used for a different year. There are ways to find that out that all involve knowing a guy, at least to check out a plate before purchase. You currently cannot use restored plates. That means if you have a nicely refinished plate and go to the registry they will reject you. I restored mine after and have had no problems for 15 years.

I believe there was no plate for 1950 so you would need a 49 plate. There might be a 50 commercial plate which is what would be best for your car. Until the 80s ALL TRUCKS in Massachusetts had to be registered as commercial vehicles. Your truck is from a period when people bought trucks because they needed a truck.

Also you should join the Early Ford V8 club of New england. We are having our meeting the last Thursday of this month at Kimballs in Lancaster.

Really?? Why would there be no plate for '50? Did the registry screw up and not issue that year for some reason?

Good point about checking whether the number is already in use. There seems to be a search function on the Mass RMV web site, I guess I should start there. Good point also about commercial. I'll have to keep eye out for that.

Cool. I should have the truck by then, I'll come by.

Thanks!

Frank is correct. There was no plate issued for 1950. The 1949 plate was revalidated with a windshield sticker.
