Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
I have a 29 tudor with a downdraft weber. I figured more people in this forum may be running fuel pumps. Anyways, ive got a 6v carter vein pump that works great but is obnoxiously loud. Does anyone have experience with a 6v pump that is good quality and quiet? I see macs sells one but i dont want to dump another $50 on a fuel pump not knowing if its going to be just as loud as what i already have.

Slow…….. I have a Carter on my ‘40 and it’s right under the seat. I used some sound deadner and wrapped it. The other pump I used was an Airtex. Both are 6v.

A cushion with some give under the pump mount will help. Also, rubber fuel line to connect the pump input and output, if possible. Put service loops in the fuel lines to facilitate pump and/or filter changes.

I have my pump mounted underneath the car on the frame rail. I can clearly hear the pump over the car idling. Are the airtex pumps quiet?

I bought the one from Macs a few years ago. I believe it is the Airtex brand. It’s works good, and is quiet. When I turn it on, it’s just audible enough to know it’s there, but you can’t hear it at all when the engine runs.

Re: Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
Ditch the carter and fit a 6 volt AIRTEX E8902 which is low pressure to suit the early Ford V8. Mount it up the back just ahead of the fuel tank and as low as possible. Make sure you fit a filter between the tank and fuel pump. No good mounted up the front. Will work in a neg or pos ground vehicle just by reversing the two wires on the pump. Regards, Kevin.

Re: Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
Carter has run great for 9 years no probs. It is mounted to frame with rubber bumpers. I stuck insulation on the floor board and wrapped also around the pump. It’s very quiet. I have an Airtex on my ‘57 F100 with 5.0 liter modified and it’s very quiet also. I keep an extra Airtex 6v around just as a safety measure.

Thanks! I might put one on my 32 Cab to prime the mechanical system when the car sits. Might take some load off of my starter. |

Never mind - I see that it comes with that filter. Not a bad setup for $33. |

My ‘41 has an inline Airtex on a spring loaded switch, I hold it on to prime my carb, it is frame mounted and quiet.

Re: Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
Thanks Koates . . . that is what I suspected, but it pays to ask somebody running one! I ordered one on Amazon - total price $38 to my door, not too bad. Might help save a $150 starter! LOL

Re: Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
These pumps push better than they pull, and should be mounted close to the tank with the filter at the input side of the pump. Most of the loud sound problems we have seen are due to transmission of the sound to the metal fuel line. Check the routing of the line to see if and where it contacts the frame or body and move it away or place a piece of sound absorbing material from that point.

FYI: Airtex is now Carter.
"We are excited to add Airtex Fuel Pumps and ASC Water Pumps to our current Carter Fuel Pumps portfolio,” said Jay Burkhart, president of TRICO Group. ... (UCI) today announced the sale of the Performance Pumps business, comprised of ASC Industries and Airtex Products, to TRICO Group." |

Re: Anyone running a quiet 6v electric fuel pump?
The mechanical is pretty quiet.
Carter makes a quiet rotatory closed system, but it requires a check valve and a bypass line. Push/pull will always make noise. Somewhere I have the schematic for the rotatory pump plumbing. I hope I can post this. Its an old pdf from Mr Bruce Lancaster (think it was designed to be shared by him). Also a rtf on airtex I collected over time.
