Default Auburn Clutch & Pressure Plate

Can anyone fill me in on the significance of an Auburn C&PP vs. say the Long style C&PP?

● Are there any advantages to using an Auburn style clutch?
● Are they still being manufactured today and if so by whom?
● Were they ever used in the production of the EFV-8's?
● What is/was the typical cost of an Auburn 9" clutch vs. a Long style 9" clutch?
What would be a good estamated value/asking price today assuming new, never been used pressure plate and disc??
● Any other significant information available on the Auburn clutch that I have not already asked about?

I remember hearing/reading about Auburn set ups in the late 50's early 60's.
My thoughts are they took less foot pressure to operate. Then again I may be wrong and others will step in.

Thank you Tom. Rumbleseat was my hero. I miss him, his helpful posts, and his travel stories.
Your 59L block is still safely stashed in the garage. Might make it down to Vic's next Feb/Mar and bring it with me

I ran a 11'' Auburn behind a 303'' Olds in 48 Ford coupe for several years. I changed the engine for a better one and for no good reason replaced the Auburn with a Long. First trip down the road I knew that was a mistake!
I highly recomend the Auburn.

Eddie,
Could you please elaborate as to why it was a mistake? What did the auburn do that the long didn't?
Many thanks,
Martin.

I would add to Rumbleseat's article: The first of the clutch and pressure plates for the Ford V8 were the Borg & Beck continued from the Model A & used in the V8 from 32-early 35. It was replaced by the Long style. Centrifugal weights added to the three arms of the pressure plate increased the pressure exerted on the clutch at higher RPM, eliminating clutch slip. Since the three centrifugal weights are on the operating arms of the pressure plate they also increase the pedal pressure necessary at higher RPM making the Long pressure plate operating foot pressure seem erratic (lighter at lower RPM and harder at higher RPM). With the pressure plate change the clutch plate was modified with springs to soften the grab point of the clutch. This made the clutch seem much smoother.

Gentlemen, I have just read Rumbleseats article and he wrote in the section about Auburn pressure plates " These were a very light diaphragm clutch".The photos in Johns original post shows two styles of spring and lever pressure plates. Was there a third style that was fitted with a diaphragm?

Further, I never realized that the Auburn had a unique clutch disc associated with the pressure plate

It was much stiffer than the Auburn. In heavy traffic my left leg really got a work out.
