Default 40 deluxe lettering red??

Removed the script from the hood to clean the paint underneath... it looks like the lettering used to be red??

Was this factory or did someone paint the chrome red?

I have some NOS 40 locking gas caps and the red on them is a dark red, not a real bright red like the repos come with. I think what I have is a One-Shot lettering enamel Dark Red that is quite close. i used this on my only car I put together to be judged and didn't lose any points. Just the edges of those scripts are painted red.

Perfectly accurate advice.

Is this only for Deluxe cars? Were the Standards plain, or blue, like the trunk badge?

No paint on the Ford V8 model hood scripts.

While my 40 standard coupe is modified the exterior is stock and all the trim that has paint is a darker red which matches the red script on my Drake grille guard. Not that I would change it but is this close to correct?

Interesting, my emblems also have the red background on them.

And here, all these years, I thought it was just a bad masking job on the last repaint.

I am straining my brain to remember if my OEM originals had the red paint. I don't think they did, like "Kube" said.
Can't tell from this photo.

I'm not certain I understand your question... Your Ford V8 (aka Standard) emblems have red paint on them?
If that's the case, that is not correct.

To be clear, the Deluxe models had the edges of the hood emblems painted dark red. The Ford V8 (again, aka "standard") models had ZERO paint on the emblems.

Your grille guard script being painted red is correct for ALL 1940 Ford passenger cars.
