Thumbs down ticking sound II

i guess he ticking sound here to stay . ive put a new exhast clamp, gasket, and pipe on it an it still ticks. at my witts end. i took the pipe off of it and started it with straight manifold and it didnt tick, tells me that its not a tappet. the only thing i can think about is a hairline crack in manifold. and does anybody know where i can get a manifold with the heat exchanger for the autolite heater.

I would bet that Berts has an old used Autolite heater manifold.

With engine OFF and COOL.
Switch your shop vac to 'blow' and stick the hose in the tail pipe. Spray some soapy water on the exhaust manifold and around the clamp.
Bubbles = Leaks/Cracks.

I've got a heater manifold that I just took off my car, looks straight and didn't leak. You can have it for 20.00 plus actual shipping cost if you want it. Just let me know.

For finding external noises such as exhaust or vacuum leaks you need to search with a piece of garden hose about 3 feet long. Put one end to your good ear and search the engine with the other end. I learned this from when i was a mechanic 40 years ago. Hope it helps.

I've had new mufflers tick for a while. As they expand from the heat. Then as they cool.

You mentioned it doesn't tick with the muffler removed.
Does it continue to tick when you turn your car off?

I did replaced a cracked manifold on my A, but it was making more of a whistle sound from the air passing through the crack.

check the back side of the manifold were it leads to the exhaust pipe. The roadster had a visible crack in it but could only see it if I took the manifold off and that's were I found our small exhaust leak!

thanks guys for your help, i have found the problem. the gasket has blown out on the back side of no. 4. with further inspection the manifold has many imperfections in it. so i resurfaced it with a mild grinder and got a new gasket ordered. for future reference napa has parts for "A"s!!!!!!!
