With the price of lead-acid six-volts creeping towards $100, the Optima is beginning to look somewhat attractive.

Get further away from the city and the price goes down because county folks understand what a dollar is worth.

Optima 6v. I have purchased 2 of these from Amazon in the last 2 years for $113 shipped to my door. They hold a good charge and are doing just fine. worth considering.

Ask for a Group 1 battery for 6 volts.

Tractor Supply's exide battery 1 yr warranty last about 12 to 13 months even using a maintainer. Whoever makes their batterys leaves the quality out. Bought one at Sams club last week for $70 1yr warranty will see how long it lasts

one year warranty doesnt give me high expectations, but good if you need one in a pinch or selling a clunker for cheap.............

Lead is one of the lowest cost metals there is, Scrap prices are around .10 to .15 cents a pound. The Zinc mine in which I used to work (NJ Zinc Co.) Closed down in 1986 because of the low price of Zinc. What can you scrap a 100 Lbs of Zinc carburetors for? Not much! It's down there with lead, acid? I don't know, but I'm sure it isn't much. I don't believe the high scrap price of batteries is actually reflective of the cost of the component parts. It's just that the manufacturers get to recycle 100% of the unit and less EPA garbage if they buy them back as a package. To my knowledge, there's no market for used acid or old battery cases. Sorry if I'm just getting around to replying now. I missed your post from before.

They cost an arm and a leg at least in part because a fair number of people out there want "somethin' for nothin'." Warranty service is a full time hobby with them to get a free replacement battery every 2 to 3 years. The costs are rolled into the price as much as possible. I've heard even pro rata policies are going bye-bye because of this.

I've never warrantied a battery in my life. When they wear out, I go buy a new one. I guess I'm wierd that way. If I got a defective one I'd want a replacement, but other than that I don't get it, and it doesn't really make sense to warranty an item that is routinely abused and neglected by the end user. Maybe if I lived in a hot climate year round I'd look at it different.

My first tractor supply battery lasted 5 years ---my new one from them went bad in one year -luck of the draw perhaps ?

I am a believer in the Optima battery in everything. My R series Mack truck had two of them in it when I bought the truck over 12 years ago. Everytime I get in the truck I think "well this will be the day they fail" haven't had that day yet. Those two batteries have convinced me to go to Optima in everything. I have blue tops in the Versatile tractors and 6V in all my antique cars. No more acid growing on cables either. Optima may cost more at the first purchase but you won't have to touch the battery again for years.
