Looks good for me today, as the wheel only has 1.5" clearance from the Houdaille shock arm. That is from a 16X5 Merc wheel. Only the wheel well likely to rub. Years ago I ran 15X6 Lincoln wheels with 9.15X15 fat tires on the rear with tube shocks. I did radius the fenders. That was then: Fred A

Fred, I had the problem on the rear with the 5 1/2 wide rims. I put 5" wide rims on the back and problem solved. I don't recall the back spacing on the 5" ones, but I think you should be O.K. with the 16X5s that you have.

Yeah. I'm OK with the financial end but I'm up in the air as to how to make the connection with him to get the transportation worked out....

This picture that I'm posting for "Fred A" is meant to show a wide wheel clearing shocks. Fred continued: "The 5" shown is not my widest 16. Today l will try a 16X6. Thanks: Fred A"

Here is Fred's latest pic:

Fred's 16X6 on '40. Clearance to shock is 1" compared with a scant 1.5 for the 16X5. Thanks DD: Fred A

I see that DD really speaks the language. Perfect interpretation of what I meant to say. I really had to go out back to check if TJ's warning was a problem for me. Seem that the aftermarket 16X6 wheel is centered on the setback confirming that the whole tire assembly may be too wide for the '40 without modification. Not likely on this car. As for the OP, sorry if I hijacked the thread. Fred A

Fred ....I obviously have a real fetish for these original Ford wheels with the INSIDE nubbies for the '40s hub caps, ESPECIALLY the 16" versions. But Ford made a couple of 15" versions that come-in handy from time to time also.

I never had the situation that you're concerned about on my '40, 'cuz I've always run tube shocks. The problems that I found on the '40 were when the tire itself is too fat (like you cautioned about), when combined with a situation where the rear axle assembly DOES NOT drop very much on the spring when jacking up the chassis. That can leave you with a situation making it difficult to get a FAT tire either ON, or OFF between the brake drum and fender itself. I've had to undo the little fender brace located at the bottom, rear of the fender opening so that I can severely flex the fender outward for more room. You can see why looking at the FAT tires on my coupe BELOW. Those since have gone away and we're back to more-sensible 16" X 4-1/2" wheels with 7.00 X 16 tires. I've never had the good fortune of running-across any of the 16" X 5" Merc wheels like SOME FOLKS.

I hate to pay the shipping but I’ll have to start looking elsewhere.
If anyone has a line on another one, let me know. Anything on the West Coast would probably be easier to ship.

Ralph, there is ONE 15x5 with 5.5 bc advertised Here on the Barn in the
Swap Meet forum. It is advertised WRONG, as a 1950's Merc wheel. It
could be a "47-'48 Merc wheel, but sounds like what you need.
The Price seems fair at $80, if it runs true with good lug holes.
I'm posting the URL below, so good luck.
