This is a Mitchell installed in a '47 Ford, I believe. You can see the modifications to the floor that were necessary to keep unit from hitting the floor while traversing bumps. DD . |

Re: 1939 Deluxe 2DR Sedan
Coop, this s a pic of the front of a Mitchell OD, in a 39’ Coupe. There is 3/4” clearance from front edge to step in floor board. No floor modification.
It is coming out this next week. I am putting it in our 39’ Sedan . Hopefully it clears floor ? We will know soon. T/Y, Stretch 385EF549-4D24-4BF6-8351-CBCA6A216BDF.jpg Last edited by ssffnomad; 02-04-2022 at 08:46 AM. |

907DF2BA-244D-459A-B578-5C2F9B49C2E1.jpgI was trying to feel the access cover through the glued on carpet. Previous owners did not have a screw in cover hole. I was unable to locate.
Friend sent me measurements off his 40 Coupe. Cut carpet nice and clean . Now can hook up new harness wires. T/Y. Stretch |

Re: 1939 Deluxe 2DR Sedan
Good Morning. So I potentially have the opportunity to go look at some 39’ passenger car parts. Thinking I should get a couple extra wheels and brake drums.
So, today’s question is, is it true to take and measure the drum wear with a steel 12” ruler ? Stretch |

You can get sorta-close with a steel rule, but that is no way to accurately measure the INSIDE DIAMETER of a brake drum. This tool BELOW by "Gearwrench" is one of the less-costly tools for measuring drums. I just gave-away an older one that has a dial on it that accurately measures in THOUSANDTHS of an inch (SECOND pic BELOW). For instance, the LIMIT on OVERSIZE for old Ford drums is 12.060" (max) on a stock drum which is 12.000" to start with. In other words, ONLY 1/16" (approx) difference to be measuring wityh a ruler. Now I know what I want for Christmas 2022. Really like the look of your car! Had overlooked this thread until this morning. Just bought my own FH last fall and been thinking about how to hotrod it. Period look, dual carbs, OD, nice rake. Before I hit the interstate though, I think I'll also add front disc brakes. That 3-second following rule learned in 1970's high school driver's ed has gone the way of the dodo bird. Now it's just a sign of weakness that means two more cars can squeeze in front of you. People assume everyone has 4-piston big brakes and can go from 70 to zero in 100'. |

You don't need discs, and you quite possibly don't realize everything ELSE that must be considered when installing disc brakes, other than the discs and calipers. Put some Boling Brothers' Bendix brakes on that thing and you have more brakes than you'll ever need with those SKINNY TIRES. Even when you can lock-up the tires, the size of the contact patch on the tires (determined by tire size) is going to determine how quickly you can stop. Once you've locked 'em up with decent drums & shoes, disks won't make you stop one inch sooner! Who could'a guessed? DD . |

Coop, thanks. Thought I had a lead on some 39’ wide 5 drums within driving distance.

Re: 1939 Deluxe 2DR Sedan
Happy St. Pats day .
And a productive day it was. 12V conversion / cloth harness project under control. So , it was time to dive into drivetrain. Plan is to switch out 39 3spd & Throw Out Bearing while installing 36% Mitchell OverDrive . Working by myself on 4 post lift, got the floor boards up. Found out I had to remove the Ford hot water heater to get the metal floor board out. Took tires and wheels off . Lowered and slid the Spring / Axle back. Left the Trans in place. Removed the Torque Tube and Shaft. After Neighbor got home we slid the Mitchell unit in . Slid the Spring and Axle back up in place. This experiment was to put my crazy mind at ease. That the Mitchell gear box would actually clear the step down from trunk to rear seat floorboards. It is close , but we believe we should be ok. Maybe I should of took Steve Mitchells advice that clearance would not be a issue. But being this sedan is lowered , always had me wondering. Will sleep great tonight because it fits . And me a tired Olde boy . Stretch |
