Default 7-tooth steering worm retainer

Hi,
I have to replace the steering worm on a 7-tooth steering in a Ford A 1929.
It seems, the gear retainer is not available.
Is it not needed ? It was also not used on my car till now.
Do I need it. Where can I get it ? Do you have any information about it ?

Thanks for help.

Loss of the C-clip is not uncommon on the 7-tooth steering boxes. Some folks cut the gears off and the retainer along with it. This link has some available rectangular wire retaining rings. I don't know if any will fit but that's the only recourse if your missing one. It is there to keep the gear from moving down the shaft. It has to be pressed back up just to get it off then the gear can be pressed off.
