ford C-4 transmissions
So after grenading our 1960 fordomatic , we're thinking of changing to a C-4. Adapter kits to a Y-block are available. so question is, from what I can find C-4's were used from '64-'81 in 6 cyl's and SBF. Is there a difference between a 6 cyl C-4 and a SBF C-4? bellhousing bolt pattern or strenght of the trans.

Re: ford C-4 transmissions
Both. The c4 from the 144/170/200 "small 6" will have a different bolt pattern and lighter duty internal parts than one from a V8. Beware the earliest V8 versions that will have a 5 bolt pattern bellhousing rather than the later (1965 and up V8) 6 bolt pattern. The 240/300 six will also work since they share the SBF pattern. 1967 and up have a nicer valve body and are a good choice.
The V8 trans also came with two different sized bellhousings and flywheel tooth counts, and your adapter may require one or the other. Terry

Re: ford C-4 transmissions
I have 3 1978 vehicles with the C4 302 Fairmont, a 302 F150 and 351W LTD. I believe the larger vehicle or heavier loaded C4's have more clutches in their clutch packs. Any C4 you find should probably be rebuilt since the last ones built are getting close to 40 years old. When you do find one don't remove and lose the id tag on the servo. It's the transmissions dna code.

Also be aware of the C3, which looks like a C4, but was used in pintos, mustang II's etc...

Re: ford C-4 transmissions
Oh yeah, there is also a C4 bell housing from the factory for a 400/460 application. Harder to find, but useful when you have a small trans tunnel.

Re: ford C-4 transmissions
I used the Flat- 0-Matic kit and it went very well. Recommended.

Re: ford C-4 transmissions
If you must spend money to get a transmission, go with an overdrive. You will never regret the OD.
