What is the derivation of the term "Colorado kit"? Why not "South Dakota kit". Inquiring minds want to know.

In the V-8 Club's 52-53 Ford book it was listed as a genuine accessory. It was called the "Coronado Deck". Page 7-14 of Volume 1 of the book.

So what’s the difference with a “ Continental Kit”? Is it an aftermarket add on that moves the bumper back and puts the tire between it and the trunk?.......Mark

If you look closely, you will see that the bumper is still in the stock location. The big difference is that there is no provision for an actual spare tire. Also, since it is attached to the deck lid, it goes up an down with it. A continental kit has a complicated latching mechanism allowing the unit to be moved out of the way when accessing the trunk, which, by the way, is still fairly awkward with a regular continental kit.

This is the ultimate cosmetic accessory.

I bought this one and was my first Ford (except for a 65 Mustang in the early 80s) I liked the continental kit and took me awhile to figure out it wasn't a Ford accessory. The Tri 5 continental kits are expensive, half the price I paid for the whole Ford. It's already painted the same color as the car so I plan to keep it and it came with the center hubcap already rechromed

The Coronado kit may have been available as a authorized Ford accessory from dealers, but was part of the limited edition package which included the yellow paint job and Pace Car door transfers. Those Ford built Sunliner convertibles were replicas of the official Indianapolis 500 Pace Car for 1953, in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of the Ford Motor company.

There was a 1953 Fordor about a mile from where I grew up with a Coronado kit on it. Original owner and paint black Customline. Disappeared in the mid 1970's.
