Default ATF\Acetone

This subject has come up recently and I just got this email thought it pretty interesting."Machinist's Workshop" recently

published information on various penetrating oils. The
magazine reports they tested these products for "break out
"torque" on rusted nuts and bolts. A subjective test was made of popular penetrating oils, with
the unit of merit being the torque required to remove the nut from a
"scientifically rusted" bolt.
Average
torque load to loosen nut:
No Oil used ........................516 foot pounds
WD-40
..................... ........238 foot pounds
PB
Blaster .........................214 foot pounds
Liquid
Wrench ......................127 foot pounds
Kano
Kroil .........................106 foot pounds
ATF/Acetone mix..................... 53 foot pounds

The
ATF/Acetone mix is a "home brew" mix of 50/50 automatic transmission fluid and acetone. Note this "home brew" released bolts better than any commercial product in this
one particular test. Our local machinist group mixed up a batch, and we all now use
it with equally good results. Note also that Liquid Wrench is almost as
good as Kroil for 20% of the price.
ATF/Acetone mix is best, but you can also use ATF and lacquer thinner in a 50/50 mix. ATF = Any
type of Automatic Transmission Fluid

This same article and results was published the the John Deere "Green" club magazine. I've been using the acetone/ATV mix with good results, however I only put what I'm going to use soon into the squirt can. If all isn't used within a couple of days, the acetone evaporates and you are left with ATV, which works pretty good on its own. The acetone or lacquer thinner is the vehicle that lets the mix penetrate.

Atf and acetone must also be shaken before you use it as the two separate when at rest on your bench.

I've been using the 50/50 mix lately. I think it works pretty well. You do need to shake it up as stated.

I only mix up what is needed. Even with a tight fitting lid on a metal container The acetone will evaporate. RR

I am surprised that WD -40 worked as well as reported.I understood it to be a silicone lubricant and had no rust busting qualities !

I like the non aerosol liquid wrench. You dont waste hardly any compared to the aerosol.

The atf acetone is kinda of a pain the acetone evaporates in minutes. Ive found mineral spirits or gas works better

In loosening actual, not simulated, rusted nuts and bolts as well as every other type stuck fastener on my old coupe, I have found Blaster to work better than Liquidwrench. In fact it works so well, I don't even think about taking anything loose until I give it a squirt. But it STINKS, and I'm wondering if there is some undesirable quality that will result from using it.
Requires a well ventilated space to work in.
I used to use 3 in 1 oil, then sewing machine oil, denatured alcohol and Liquidwrench often with heat cycling. Blaster just gets right in there and so far everything has come right off.
