Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
There were the 3 on Display at the 1973 V 8 ford Club Nation Meet! Displayed in front of the Dearbon Inn as I remember. kerk

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Here are some photos taken back in Pittsburgh around 1980 when the Pittsburgh Regional Group did a semi-restoration on one of Allegheny Ludlum's Stainless 36 Fords. The car was really worn out from its years of constant driving and abuse at the hands of the public.

You are correct, Sir. ALL three of the pictured SS Ford Product were there AND as an aside, My father, brother and I drove up from Florida as it was our FIRST V8 Meet attended (me 8 year old) but we did not bring a car to show. We were standing outside the gate of the Ford test track on the day the club got to drive around and tour the track. Thankfully and generously a fellow with a 36 Roadster was by himself and had to stop by us for the car to file in and my dad asked IF we could tag along.....He aid yes and we piled into the roadster, my brother an me in the rumble seat......What a thrill. Long story short I can't remember which but either the SS Lincoln or the SS T-Bird followed us in line around the test track!!! That was back when the concours show was IN Greenfield Village sort of back empty field... WAY cooler then than now!!!! IT now seems or feels (at least) that Ford Motor Company could care less about us having our Grand National in Dearborn!!! AND DavidR I 100% agree with ALL you have posted, fixing that car without having to "polish" it would have been a breeze!!!! |

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
I believe these three cars are from the Crawford. About a year ago I saw the employees working to get the Bird back running and asked about the 36. They told me they lacked parts and directions were to get the bird running, since it was going to a show. I wrote an email to the director of the Crawford offering any parts I have to get the 36 running. There was no response, not even a thanks.

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Dave, you are correct. Much easier to do the original finish on the stainless. Stainless was never meant to look like chrome.

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Does anyone know of a fellow named "Boots" Goyer, an old timer who lived in FL and was an avid Ford collector? I met him in the 1980's and rumor has it that he owned a stainless steel Ford many, many years ago. I recall his garage was packed with old Ford parts. A very feisty individual.

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
David G. I was not there the day the photos were taken. I remember working on the Ford though. I was in Jon Anderson's garage for several days. It was a mess. We rewired it, replaced the fuel pump/generator/carburetor and other things with period correct items. I believe we even replaced the seal beams with original bulb/lens/reflectors. The regular steel floor, door internals and frame were not stainless and typical of a 45 year floor.

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Don: Jon Anderson looked a bit younger in your photo. Was the SS 36 you worked on an early or mid year or late year model?

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Boots did not have a stainless Ford when I knew him about that time.

The sedan in the Foundation Museum is interesting for certain. Too bad it was ruined (to history) with the polishing. Yet another person that did not understand what "restore" means.

Re: Stainless steel Fords going to auction
Terry, I don't remember whether the car was early, mid, or late 36. I'm guessing mid year. They started to fabricate the cars in early 36, but ran into so much trouble working with the stainless that it took quite a while to complete.
