Default Proper oil filter route.

My '39 V8 does not have an oil filter. It is my understanding that some cars from that era came with a filter and some did not. Rather than change the oil every 300-400 miles, as I am doing now, I would like to install an oil filter. My question is, what is the route that the oil takes from engine, to filter, to engine? I know that the filter bracket attaches to the head. I took a look underneath and there is an oil line fitting on the oil pan, but I don't know if that is part of the equation or not. My EFV8 "38-39 Ford Book" does not have a diagram and I do not have access to any old Fords around here to use for a reference. Any suggestions would be much appreciated.
Thanks, Phil

As you had inquired about the correct routing for the filter lines, I have to assume you are interested in installing a correct filter as well. I hate to sound discouraging, but you will find it nearly impossible to locate the correct '39 filter, lines, brackets, etc.

In 1939, Ford offered the filter only as an option.
If you would like more details about the correct filter, etc. let me know.

Kube,

I am would like to know more about the oil filter mounting for a 39. Mine has the older type filter that is in a sealed replaceable can mounted by bracket to the head bolts. The return is to the fuel pump stand and leaking from under the stand has always been a problem.

Tom, It sounds as if you have the correct type for '39. The routing you mention also sounds correct.
Ford did not change that return routing until late in 1940. I suppose you could modify yours if you so choose but to reiterate, your return line to the fuel pump stand was the only method in '39.

Kube,
Thanks for the pictures. Where are you running your return line as it appears to go down. Do you have a Ford heater? Mine has an Arvin and the heater hose lays against the fuel pump (not good). Mine has the original steel fuel line which I am replacing due to rust and the firewall clamp is horizontal with the screw to the bottom.

Tom, Not everything is hooked up in those photos. The RETURN line comes out of the rear of the canister and was hooked up at the fuel pump stand via a special fitting that replaced the left fuel pump to stand bolt.
The pressure hose came off of the port at the rear of the block and entered the front of the canister.
I have to tell you, finding the correct fittings and NOS hoses for this set-up was a tiring experience!
Oh, yes, a factory water heater is installed in this vehicle.
