Default Carbuerator question

Curiosity question. Is there a purpose for this hole in the base gasket?

When it mates to the intake manifold it lines up to nothing. Would a Stromberg base gasket with no hole work just the same?

The hole in the gasket isn't needed if using a Holley 94 type carb since the base is slotted.
