Re: main bearings
I think carb cleaner or brake clean would work, but if you're worried about strong solvents, use real kerosene. I think that's all they used originally and you can leave the bearings soak till they are clean.

Re: main bearings
I've been building engines for 60 years and got alot coasmoline parts, piston, bearings, you name it. You can spend a long time trying to get it off with solvent and about anything else that's cold. Accually real hot water melts it off pretty guick. BUT, this is the fastest way. I fire up my space heater, I set on a bucket, have a pan of solvent, (I use mineral sprites), close by, hold the part with a pair of channel locks about a foot in front of the heat coming out of the space heater, have a pan on the floor and the stuff will run right off, then slosh the part around in the solvent and it will be brand new. You don't have to get it hot enough to hurt any part. Walt

Re: main bearings
When your wife is gone just put them on a paper plate and put them in the oven at 250. The cosmoline will all melt off and leave a clean bearing

Re: main bearings
Wax, paper plate, and a bad oven thermostat, How do you explain it all to the insurance adjuster, let alone your soon to be ex-wife?

Re: main bearings
My answer- use the BBQ, out back of the house... Don't ask the wife.
